What we learn about marketing from the DNC

This week history is again in the making in the US. Our two major political parties conduct their national conventions to elect their respective party’s candidate for president.

I took some time off yesterday and watched the national news stations while they debated the entire event that was to happen last night.

It was quite interesting to listen to all the reporters share their views of what was to happen, and it dawned on me that this is just marketing taken to its extreme!

One guest specializes in analyzing commercials and discussed what is effective and what is not. What I took away from that discussion is what I am always telling my clients. Always imagine that the person you are promoting your services to is asking him/herself this question: “What’s in it for me?”

So, what we can learn from this week’s DNC is to really understand what makes your clients tick. What is it they really want? And then plan your messages accordingly.

You may not be running for President, but marketing is still marketing, and in this game, the person who can best answer ‘what’s in it for me?’ will win.
